Had listened to this ghazal- one of my earliest- eons ago. Original ghazal has 11 couplets- awesome Shakeel Badayuni. Farida Khanum is absolutely soulful.

Ghazals are poetry and poetry needs musical composition when expressed in vocal melody and not mere recitation. A singer's rendition in a film song and have a copyright to that composed music but a ghazal written by a poet today or centuries past has no musical attribute. If Begum Akhtar had been assigned a particular melody by herself or any musician to record this ghazal of Late Shakeel Badayuni and you are accustomed to that rendition, you can not expect Farida Khanum to replicate it exactly

@piyush30300 Yes, piyush! Yeh ghazal hi aisa ek nagina hai ke har fankaar apne andaaz se gaanaa chahta hai- na sirf aapko behlaane ke liye par mehez apni andar ki tasalli ke liye!I have heard it sung by many younger artistes but Farida Khanum's was my first ! I see sabri brother's version here, and wonder if Mehdi sahab has sung it too; lekin raat ke pichhle peher betaab dil o dimaag me agar yeh ghazal goonjegi to sirf begum sahiba ki awaaz me!

Dare I say, Farida Khanum's version more emotional and soulful than Begum Akhtar's. Love both of them though! |
