Many great singers have sung this song, but nothing comes close to Begum Akhtar's version.

farida khanum singer and faiz ahmad faiz poetry===lethal combination
dadabhera84 (November 30, 1999 at 12:00 am)
this ghazal was composed by farida khanum herself in raag aiman kalyan. and no one but no one can sing it like her. see how she uses the raag to enact the words: the slow shaam-e-firaq, heavy and settling, until suddenly it's gone (the lightning-fast taan at "tal gayi"). wah wah wah!

I stand by by my opinion...if someone aint liking it....thats their prerogative.

@nycdude111 Please do not compare these two. Farida Khanam is a singer of classical genre from the famous Patiyala Gharana. She is a female "Ustaad". Abida Parween is a folk soul singer and a female Faqeer. It is like comparing Ustad Amant Ali or Nusrat Fateh Ali with Saein Akhter, Allan Faqeer, or Saein Zahoor.

She is lovely.

I think Abida Parveen is a more accomplished singer than Farida Khanum especially when it comes to alaaps and the fusion of Hindi and Urdu poetry.

No disrespect, but Farida Khanum is in a league way beyond Abida Parveen's. While Farida's version is raw music like the sound of whiskey pouring into a glass, Abida's is representative of an age where artists rely more and more on digital enhancements. The honesty with which Farida Khanum performs here is a reflection of her devotion to and complete immersion in music. It's a shame the complete ghazal isn't available here. Would love to listen to it in its entirety!
